In 2009 I gave birth to my second child. I hadn’t even considering babywearing at this point, but trying to balance a two-year old, and a newborn in a car seat whenever I went somewhere was difficult. Shopping was a nightmare. If I put my daughter in the seat, then my son (and his car seat) had to go in the cart, leaving less room for groceries. If I carried my son, and put my daughter in the seat, I could barely manage to steer the cart with one hand. It was frustrating.
I started looking into baby carriers, finding many that I loved, but few I could actually afford. At the time, I was struggling financially, and spending $100 on a baby carrier was out of the question. I spent the next few weeks designing and developing a pattern to make a carrier. My first pattern, although close, failed, miserably. After some revisions, (and some graciously provided sewing lessons from my grandmother) I finally got my pattern right.
The pattern can be worn on the front with the strap crossed in the back, or on the back, much like a backpack, although back-carries are made easier with the use of a chest clip.
I was shocked with the amount of people who were interested in my carriers. I received many compliments and many requests for custom carriers. I have made several over the years, mostly for friends and family and although I’d like to make one for everyone who asks, I simply don’t have the time! Because of this, I have decided to offer my pattern for use so that more people can enjoy these carriers.
PERSONAL USE ONLY
I designed this pattern on my own, using just some brown packaging paper, a ruler and a permanent marker. This pattern took many, many, many hours of work to design. Further, converting it to digital format, as well as creating the videos and slideshows to accompany the pattern took a great deal of time and effort. I request that this time and effort is respected.

I am not responsible for the safety of your carriers.
This set of instructions is simply that; a set of instructions. I have done my absolute best to ensure that this set of instructions is very detailed and takes any and all safety issues into account, however, I cannot be held responsible for any products you create. There are many factors that could cause your carrier to be unsafe for use, such as choosing a poor quality thread, failing to double- or triple-stitch when indicated, choosing poor quality fabrics, or incorrect tension settings on your sewing machine. There are countless issues that could result in the carrier you create being unsafe. For this reason, I can, in no way, guarantee the strength or durability of the baby carriers you create using this pattern and am not responsible for any issues that arise from any carriers you create.
I strongly recommend you inspect and test your carrier before each use.
I strongly encourage you to inspect any carrier you own (whether you made it or bought it) prior to each and every use. Before using any carrier, you should test the straps, tug on them, pull on them and feel how sturdy they are. If there is any doubt in your mind, do not use the carrier until it feels sturdy. Prior to a handmade carrier’s first use, you may also want to weight-test your carrier by wearing it with weighted objects placed where the baby would sit(such as books, magazines, medicine balls, etc). Very carefully, and with someone to help, bounce, move, and shift positions to see how the carrier handles the weight.
How difficult is the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier pattern to follow?
The My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier pattern is catered toward those with intermediate to advanced sewing skills, however, the instructions are incredibly detailed and includes many videos and slideshows to demonstrates steps and techniques. Many beginning sewers have had success using the pattern.
Can the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier pattern be sewn by hand?
The My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier pattern should not be sewn by hand. Sewing any baby carrier by hand is not recommended as it could greatly compromise the safety of the carrier. Additionally, the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier is a lot of work with a sewing machine, and would take a significantly longer amount of time to sew without a machine.
Do I need a special machine to make a My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier?
Most sewing machines work well enough to be used when sewing a My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier. If your machine has a difficult time handling thicker amounts of fabric, you may not want to use it for making a My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier.
Can I sell carriers made from the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier pattern?
We ask that you do not sell carriers made from the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier pattern. A lot of time and effort was put into the development of the pattern, as well as the digital availability of the pattern. We ask that this work is respect and that carriers made from the pattern or derived from the pattern are not sold unless a license is purchased.
What weight range does the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier accomodate?
This really depends on how your carrier is made, the materials used, and the strength of the stitching. You should always weight test your carrier before assuming your carrier will accomodate a specific weight. Generally speaking, however, the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier will accomodate up to 35 pounds, sometimes more.
Can the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier be used on newborns and smaller babies?
Yes. The My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier can be used on smaller babies and newborns by turning the waist band up so that the back of the waist band touches the back of the body piece as shown below. It may be easier to use the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier on a smaller baby with the assistance of a infant insert, or by wrapping the baby with blankets before wearing.
Can the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier be made into a mei-tai?
With some simple adjustments, the My Babyvv Soft-Structure Carrier can be made into a mei-tai. We plan to have the mei-tai version of the pattern released shortly.
